Message from the Chair

The Pathology Connection is the official, biannual newsletter of the Department of Pathology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. We look forward to keeping you appraised of newsworthy information about our medical students, residents, 15 faculty members, two basic science researchers, 200 laboratory professionals and administrative staff.

Pathology in Transition

Today’s Department of Pathology is vastly different from its humble beginnings at the newly opened Jackson campus of our Medical Center in 1955. Originally, the second floor was the hub of medical activity.

History of Pathology at UMMC

The University of Mississippi School of Medicine was established on the Oxford, Mississippi, campus in 1903 as a two-year program. Students completed their third and fourth years of study at various other American medical schools. A School of Nursing was added in 1948. The Mississippi Legislature passed legislation in the early 1950's to construct the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. It was to include a four-year School of Medicine teaching hospital and a School of Nursing. The faculty and students at Oxford were transferred to the Jackson campus, which opened in 1955.

Antique Microscopes: A Great Hobby!

This early brass, binocular, single-objective microscope has a cast brass base with reverse Y-claw foot design and carrying two flat, cast pillars.

Faculty Spotlight on Varsha Manucha

I graduated from an all ladies medical school in New Delhi, India. There, along with medicine, I also learned to take pride in my identity and the value of “community”. My passion for pathology stemmed from the 4th edition of the “Robbins” Pathologic basis of disease.
